The stepped wedge cluster randomised trial is a novel research study design that is increasingly being used in the evaluation of service delivery type interventions. The design involves random and sequential crossover of clusters from control to intervention until all clusters are exposed.

Experiment Design and Data Collection. In the context of a cluster randomised trial, the stepped-wedge design involves the collection of observations during a baseline period in which no clusters are exposed to the intervention.

Model - Disadvantages. Cluster Randomized Trials and Usually, less efficient than individually randomized trial . Stepped wedge designs are useful for “phase IV” trials, to evaluate. This JAMA Guide to Statistics and Methods discusses the stepped-wedge apporach to cluster randomized clinical trial design, in which clusters. This paper provides a review of studies employing a particular design, known as a 'stepped wedge'.

In a stepped wedge design, an intervention is rolled-out sequentially to the trial participants (either as individuals or clusters of individuals) over a number of time periods.

Results - Methods - Results and discussion - Conclusion. The stepped wedge (SW) cluster randomized controlled trial (CRCT) design is being used with increasing frequency. However, there is limited. We developed a new expression for the design effect for a stepped wedge trial, assuming that observations are equally correlated within. Although the stepped wedge design extends the length of a randomized trial due to the presence of multiple time intervals, the nature of the design may be.
